Hello! I am a resident of Koreatown and would like to attend your next meeting. How do I find a schedule of your meetings?
    Thank you!

The WCKNC general board meetings are held at 6PM on the second Monday of each month at the Young Oak Kim Academy – 615 Shatto Place Los Angeles, CA 90005. There will be no meeting on October 10, 2011 in observance of Columbus Day.

Dear Wilshire Center-Koreatown Neighborhood Council Officers:

We write in support of any improvements to the 4th street bike project. The “sharrows” were a good start, but it simply is still not safe enough for cyclists/pedestrians as cars continue to zoom through the numerous intersections, especially in areas highly trafficked by kids going to school. My wife and I live near 3rd and Hobart. We moved here about 1 year ago so we could be closer to our jobs in downtown LA. One of the primary reasons we moved here was because of the walkability and extensive transportation options to get to work. But walking is becoming less safe with more and more cars squeezed on these small streets.

Let me advocate for children who really don’t have a voice in this matter, especially in cases where their parents might not speak English or are too busy to write letters. As a person who walks 15 minutes from 3rd/Hobart to Wilshire/Western, I see kids walking everyday to Caheunga and Charles Kim Elementary with their parents, many of them walking into intersections where cars accelerate, only to stop in the middle of an intersection because someone in walking. Countless times, I’ve seen cars zoom around a corner to make a quick left turn or right turn almost hitting children. We must provide an immediate solution to slowing down cars and provide alternative ways of getting to school that do not rely on fast-moving cars.

    Here are a few suggestions:
    - support and invest alternative methods of transportation for safe walkways/bikeways so kids can get to school and people can get to work. My wife and I have recently started bicycling to work on occasion by going down 4th st., then connecting to the 7th st. bikeway. This means more people can safely ride their bicycles to work/school and thereby reduce the overall number of cars in the Koreatown area. By supporting more biking in the area, it will probably mean more people like myself who own cars, will drive less and contribute less to the horrible traffic in the area. Koreatown has an embarassing image as place with great restaurants and bars but atrocious parking. Supporting alternative transportation would be one step towards alleviating this problem.

    - I recently heard from someone that a teacher from Charles Kim Elementary was “jumped” and mugged near 5th street. While it happened in broad daylight, no other pedestrians were nearby. If we created safer walking/biking zones that had a consistent flows of pedestrians and bikers, I believe there would be less tagging (this is another huge issue) and mugging as regular pedestrians/bikers always look out for each other. I genuinely feel safer walking 20 ft. behind someone than I do with 5 cars driving by. Drivers can sometimes be too busy focused on being the first at the 4-way stoplight.

    – support infrastructure improvements that reduce the speed of traffic on 4th st. Most cars should be going on 3rd or 6th, not driving 40 mph on a street that many children and grandmothers use.

Thank you for your attention in this matter. Please feel free to read this letter at your November 14th meeting, if needed. I hope to attend the December meeting in-person and hope you all have a successful November meeting.

FYI, I tried your sbc email but got a bounce back.

    Thanks,
